Founder Steve Moore and Ana after she recovered from surgery

Our Story

In the late 1990s, Steve Moore traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip with his church. So profoundly touched and moved by the people he met, he returned home with a new purpose. God had opened his heart to Guatemala, and he was led to found The Shalom Foundation.

Since then, we have built homes and schools, provided education sponsorships, installed clean water systems, and much more for the people of Guatemala. However, it was after meeting a young girl named Ana that the Foundation’s mission became clear.

While in Guatemala City, a sobbing mother ran to him for aid. Her daughter, Ana, had been caught in the crossfire of a gang fight and was hit with a stray bullet. After flying her to U.S. to receive care, he was faced with the harsh realities many Guatemalan children experience. While Ana thankfully recovered from her wounds, he knew that other children still lacked access to quality medical care.

After learning more about the conditions many Guatemalan children live in, he was inspired with a clear vision for the Foundation: to provide critical medical and nutritional care to underprivileged children.

For over 20 years, we’ve been providing healing and hope to vulnerable Guatemalan children.

OUR VISION

The Moore Center staff and volunteers provide life-changing surgical and nutritional care to vulnerable children in Guatemala, regardless of their financial background.

We are a faith-based 501(c)(3) that provides free, life-changing medical and nutritional care.

Our Values:

We believe everyone deserves access to high-quality care.

We are committed to giving the highest quality care to our kids that visit the Moore Center, no matter what. That’s why we have a “pay what you can” model for our patients that provides access to critical care no matter a family’s financial situation.

We believe care extends beyond the operating room.

Our incredible social workers help each family work out the details – from transportation to and from the Moore Center for pre and post-operative care, to partnering with the Ronald McDonald House in Guatemala City so that these families have somewhere to stay while their child is being operated on, we make sure everything is taken care of.

We believe every child deserves the chance to have a brighter future.

Quality of life means removing stigma and providing every child with the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the life they were born into. We check in on our kids and provide encouragement to them and their parents every step of the way.

We believe we are called to partner for the greater good.

Working and partnering with locals who understand the deeply rooted culture of Guatemala is the best way to ensure that we continue to meet the real needs of the people. No one knows the needs better than those who live and work in-country. By working together, we can provide the very best options for our patients. Together we are stronger.

Our Team.
