Housing Teams Prepare to Bring New Homes and Hope June, 2010, Franklin, TN – Want to do something different this summer? More than 60 local volunteers will spend part of their summer preparing to travel and serve families in Guatemala City, Guatemala. They are raising support and awareness to provide safe, new homes for families, to provide support for a local schools and The Moore Center for Children’s Health. After weeks of team-building meetings and heart-led preparations, these volunteers will head to Guatemala City for a trip of a lifetime -- a life changing trip for many. Parents in Guatemala dream of safety for their children and basic home amenities such as running water, clean floors, a sturdy roof, sound doors and windows. Shalom volunteers, ranging in age from 15 to 75, will provide homes to meet the dreams of each family. They will also provide improvements for local schools and The Moore Center for Children’s Health. “We come ready to give, and what we get in exchange is so much greater,” said Shalom team leader Rick Swayze. “This is my sixth housing trip. Each year I am more blessed and find more to be thankful for in my life. People here have great faith in God and believe in His plan for their lives. They set a good example of how we should live – with joy and faith in His goodness.” Shalom’s teams leave for Guatemala City July 2 -10 and July 30 – August 7. New volunteers are encouraged to join the July 30 team. Contact Shalom Foundation’s Director of Programs Kevin McQuaig, kmcquaig@theshalomfoundation.org, for more information. “My first trip to Guatemala changed my life,” said team leader Colon Pope. “I have good friends in Guatemala and people I consider ‘family’.” |
