Medical Program

The Medical Program serves children from across Guatemala, changing their lives forever. Through The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Zone 1 of Guatemala City, The Shalom Foundation provides a modern medical facility to serve as home base for visiting Shalom Medical Teams.

Shalom’s Medical Program addresses the desperate medical and health needs of poor children in Guatemala. The lives of these children are improved through surgical treatment, appropriate follow-up care, dental care, optical clinics, wellness clinics and good health education. Our Medical Teams provide treatment that is financially and socially out of reach for acutely poor children.

Collaboration with medical organizations in both the United States and Guatemala is key to the success of the Medical Program. Since 2005, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has provided valuable resources and support designating The Shalom Foundation as their International Surgical Partner. Specialty Surgical Teams from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt have traveled with Shalom Foundation providing life-changing procedures for children who would otherwise go untreated.  The Denver Children’s Hospital has joined Shalom as a new medical partner providing surgical teams and multi-faceted support.

Medical Teams supported by Children’s Hospitals and other recognized medical organizations across the United States are invited to work with The Shalom Foundation to serve these needy children.

Shalom is developing relationships with other organizations whose goals are similar. These organizations include children’s hospitals in the United States, members of the medical community, humanitarian aid agencies, non-profits, universities and other NGOs both in the US and Guatemala.

The Objectives of the Medical Program are:

  • Provide surgical, medical and dental specialty teams to operate in Guatemala
  • Build, equip and maintain The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center
  • Create sustainable programs to provide health care service
  • Educate the community on how to better care for themselves
  • Share technology and information as it relates to advancements in medical treatments, surgical procedures, medicines and education
  • Provide elective international rotations for pediatric residents and nurses from the U.S.

Benefits:

  • Needy children are identified, diagnosed and treated for complicated medical conditions and traumatic injuries that are typically out of reach for them financially and socially
  • Medical team members reap great personal rewards through helping these children and improving the medical care in Guatemala for all people
  • Families of treated children are ministered to through missions volunteers and from the local church to ensure they hear the Gospel
